Big Cup Golf Outing June 10, 2016

It was almost a perfect day for playing 18 holes of golf. There were thundershowers that lasted about 30 minutes. This gave the golfers a chance to come in off the golf course and get hydrated at the “Caddyshack”. After the short shower–the sun came back out and the golfers were able to finish the outing.

This was the fourth year the Hayward Lions Club hosted a “Big Cup” golf outing at the Hayward Golf Course. Eighty-eight golfers (22 teams of 4) participated in the event–a sizable increase in the number of participants from last year. The “Big Cup” event has proven to be a poplar golf outing with the local golfers. It was possible to register as a team or as an individual. For those registering as an individual, the event chairperson, Ray Moeller, assigned them to a team. The “shot gun start” began at noon and most of the golfers were done golfing about 5:00 p.m. At 5:00 p.m. the putting contest (sponsored by Hayward Community Credit Union) began. Each participant was given three shots to putt the golf ball into the hole on the putting green. Seven of the participants were able to accomplish this athletic feat. The seven contestants were narrowed down to one finalist by putting to another hole at a longer distance. Cliff Williams was the winner of the putting contest. Cash prizes were awarded to the first three winners ($125, $75, $50). At 6:00 p.m., the group was treated to a buffet meal in the dining room/patio area of the Hayward Golf Course. Chuck Aubart (Hogman) cooked the meat on his custom made BBQ grill. Ticket prices were $75 (includes 18 holes of golf, golf cart, putting contest, two drink tickets, hole events and Chuck Aubart’s pig roast).

Prizes were awarded after the meal. There were three team divisions (Gold, White, Blue). A cash prize ($300) was awarded to the top team in each division. It was possible for a person/team to win a $25 prize at each of the 18 holes. Twenty-five door prizes were given out to those attending the outing.

Timber Ford sponsored all four of the par 3 holes. If anyone had gotten a “hole in one” on hole 14–the prize would have been a two year lease on a 2016 Ford Escape. At hole 12 the participants had a special treat–Hookstone Winery made it possible to get a bottle of wine for golfers able to place their first drive on the green.
