Hayward Lions Hosted “Big Cup” Golf Outing June 12, 2015

It was a perfect day for playing 18 holes of golf—the sun was out, a few clouds in the sky, temperature in the upper 70s and a light wind. This was the third year the Hayward Lions hosted a “big cup” golf outing at the Hayward Golf Course. Fifty-four golfers participated in the event–an increase in the number of participants from last year. The “big cup” event has proven to be a poplar golf outing with the local golfers. It was possible to register as a team or as an individual. For those registering as an individual, the event chairperson, Gary Nelson, assigned them to a team. The “shot gun start” began at noon and most of the golfers were done golfing about 5:00 p.m. At 5:00 p.m., the putting contest began narrowing the field of competitors down from 54 to 10. Ten golfers entered the second round and this number was reduced to five for the final round of the putting contest. The winner of the putting contest was Gail Johnson. Dave Gootke was the second place winner in the putting contest and Scott Ancel was third. Cash prizes were awarded to the winners ($125, $75, $50). The putting contest was sponsored by Hayward Community Credit Union. At 6:00 p.m., the group was treated to a buffet meal in the dining room/patio area of the Hayward Golf Course. Chuck Aubart (Master BBQ Chef) cooked the meat on his custom made BBQ grill.

Prizes were awarded after the meal. There were three team divisions (Gold, White, Blue). A cash prize ($300) was awarded to the top team in each division. In the Gold Division the winning team with a score of 66 was: Schindler (Ray), Olsen (Jason), Bishop (Wade), Schucka (Shane). The White Division winning team with a score of 63 was: Mell (Kevin), Mell (Shelley), Mell (Keith), Swanson (Tim). The Blue Division winning team with a score of 59 was: Boyer (Mike), Rogers (JR), Bergquist (Brian), Laven (Scott). It was possible for a person/team to win a $25 prize at each of the 18 holes. The winner of the 50/50 was given $143. Twenty-five door prizes were given out to those attending the outing.

Timber Ford sponsored all four of the par 3 holes. For those that were able to get a “hole in one” on hole 14–the prize was a two year least on a Ford Escape. At hole 12, participants had a special treat–Hookstone Winery made it possible to get a bottle of wine for golfers able on their first drive to place the ball on the green.
